Hostgator

Been using HostGator for maybe 6 or 7 years for a personal portfolio site and a couple of other small projects. It's not going to win any speed awards, and I've seen some chatter about their support going downhill, but honestly, it's been mostly reliable for me. I think because I'm comfortable using cPanel to do most things myself, I rarely have to contact them, which is a good thing I guess. The price is okay, and the thought of moving all my files and databases somewhere else is just too much of a hassle. It's one of those services that's just "good enough" to not make you leave. If you need top-tier speed and support, look elsewhere. If you just need a place to park a simple website and you know your way around a control panel, it's fine.

I was with HostGator for two years and finally had enough. The cheap initial price is what sucks you in, but the performance was just consistently poor. My website's loading times were slow, and I know it was hurting my search engine rankings. I tried all the optimization tricks, but the server itself was the bottleneck. The final straw was the customer support. I had a critical issue where my site was throwing a 500 error, and I was on hold for over 45 minutes just to get connected to a live chat agent. When I finally got through, the agent was clueless and just kept telling me to clear my cache. After three days of back-and-forth with no resolution, I gave up. I migrated everything to a different host (A2 Hosting) over the weekend, and the speed difference was night and day. I wouldn't recommend HostGator to anyone who is serious about their website's performance.

I've been hosting my local contracting business website on HostGator's "Baby Plan" for about 3 years. For what it's worth, the uptime has been pretty solid. I can't remember the last time my site was actually down, which is the most important thing for me since I get leads through my contact form. The cPanel is straightforward, and setting up my professional email addresses was no problem. My main gripe is the performance and the pricing model. My site can feel a bit sluggish sometimes, especially on mobile. And the renewal price was a shock after my first year—it was more than double what I initially paid. Customer support is a mixed bag; sometimes you get someone great, other times you get someone clearly reading from a script who isn't much help. It's a decent, "set it and forget it" service if your needs are simple, but I'm starting to look at faster options now that my business is growing.

My site was working fine, but one day I had an issue where the "lock" icon (the SSL certificate) wasn't showing up. I freaked out a little but decided to try their live chat support. I had to wait about 15 minutes, but the person who helped me (I think his name was John) was super patient. He figured it out and fixed it for me in about 20 minutes. The speed is okay for now, and for the cheap introductory price, I really can't complain. So far, so good for a newbie like me.
